FAQ
CQC BASICS
What is the Care Quality Commission (CQC)?
The CQC is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. It inspects and rates services - and those ratings matter enormously, both for the people you care for and for the reputation and viability of your business. Navigating CQC's expectations is rarely straightforward, and the consequences of getting it wrong can be serious. That's where Verelle comes in.
Do I need to be registered with CQC?
If you provide regulated activities in England, registration with CQC is a legal requirement - not optional. The process involves more than filling in a form, and errors or omissions at this stage can cause significant delays or refusals. We know exactly what CQC looks for and how to present your application compellingly. Get in touch to find out how we can help you register with confidence.
What does CQC actually assess when it inspects my service?
CQC inspects against five key questions: is your service Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led? Within each of these, inspectors look for specific evidence - and knowing what that evidence looks like, and how to demonstrate it, is a skill in itself. Our team understands the inspection process from the inside, and we help providers present their best case.
What is a CQC rating and why does it matter?
CQC rates services as Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, or Inadequate. Your rating is published publicly and can directly affect your reputation, your contracts, your occupancy or referral rates, and your ability to operate. Achieving and maintaining a Good or Outstanding rating is not just about compliance - it's a business imperative. Verelle helps providers get there and stay there.
COMPLIANCE & PREPARATION
What does being 'CQC compliant' actually involve?
Compliance is far more than having the right policies on a shelf. It means being able to demonstrate - at any point, to any inspector - that your service is genuinely safe, well-governed, and person-centred. The gap between thinking you're compliant and being able to evidence it is where many providers come unstuck. Verelle helps you close that gap.
How do I know if my service is inspection-ready?
Honestly? Most providers don't know until it's too late. The warning signs are often subtle - documentation that hasn't kept pace with practice, governance processes that look good on paper but aren't embedded in day-to-day culture, or training records that aren't quite complete. If you're unsure, that uncertainty is reason enough to speak to us.
What policies and procedures does CQC expect me to have?
CQC expects comprehensive, current documentation that genuinely reflects how your service operates - not generic templates downloaded from the internet. The specific requirements vary by provider type and the regulated activities you carry out. We can tell you exactly what your service needs and ensure it's in place. Contact us to discuss your documentation.
What is clinical governance and does it apply to my service?
Clinical governance is the system through which providers are accountable for quality and safety in clinical care. CQC takes it seriously - particularly under the Well-led and Safe domains - and inspectors know the difference between services where clinical governance is genuinely embedded and those where it exists only on paper. As a clinically-led consultancy, this is an area where Verelle adds particular value.
INSPECTIONS
What should I expect during a CQC inspection?
Inspections can arrive with little or no notice. Inspectors speak to your staff, the people you support, and review your records and systems in detail. They are experienced, thorough, and trained to look beyond the surface. The providers who fare best are those who are prepared before the inspector walks through the door - not scrambling to get ready once they arrive.
We've just received inspection notification - is it too late to prepare?
It's never too late, but time is of the essence. There is meaningful preparation that can be done even with short notice, and Verelle can mobilise quickly to support you. Contact us as soon as possible and we'll assess your situation and act fast.
How has CQC's new assessment framework changed things?
CQC's new single assessment framework means providers are assessed more continuously, not just at a point-in-time inspection. Intelligence is gathered between visits, and the bar for evidence has shifted. If your compliance approach hasn't been updated to reflect these changes, you may be more exposed than you realise. Verelle keeps pace with regulatory developments so you don't have to.
Can Verelle come to our service and assess our readiness?
Yes - and this is one of the most valuable things we do. Our on-site assessments give you an honest, experienced view of where your service stands and what needs to change. We won't tell you everything is fine when it isn't. Speak to us to arrange a visit.
RATINGS & ENFORCEMENT
We've received a 'Requires Improvement' rating. What now?
A Requires Improvement rating is serious, but it is recoverable. The key is responding quickly, strategically, and with credible evidence of change - not just promises. Verelle has supported many providers through this process and knows what CQC needs to see to move the dial. Don't wait to seek support.
We've received a CQC Warning Notice. How urgent is this?
Very. A Warning Notice carries a compliance deadline and escalating consequences if not addressed. This is not a situation to navigate alone or slowly. Verelle provides urgent enforcement support and can help you respond in a way that protects your registration. Call us.
Can we challenge our CQC inspection report?
You can submit a factual accuracy challenge if you believe the report contains errors of fact. The window is short and the process requires careful, evidence-based handling. Verelle can advise on whether a challenge is viable and support you in making the strongest possible case.
What happens if CQC proposes to cancel our registration?
This is the most serious regulatory situation a provider can face, and it requires immediate expert input. Verelle has experience supporting providers through CQC enforcement processes. If you are facing proposed cancellation, contact us today.
